Biography

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (born June 21, 1985), better known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is an American singer and songwriter who was born in Los Angeles, California. Her music is characterized by its cinematic quality and exploration of tragic romance, glamor, and melancholia, as well as references to contemporary pop culture and 1950s–1960s Americana, among other elements.

She has received numerous awards, including two Brit Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, and a Satellite Award, among others. The singer-songwriter has been nominated for six Grammy Awards as well as a Golden Globe. At the Hitmakers Awards, Variety recognized her as ′′one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the twenty-first century.”

Del Rey was born and raised in upstate New York before relocating to New York City in 2005 to pursue a music career. Her breakthrough occurred in 2011 with the viral success of her track “Video Games,” which led to a recording contract with Polydor and Interscope Records. After a number of projects, including her self-titled debut studio album, Del Rey’s breakthrough came in 2011.

The release of her second studio album, Born to Die (2012), which includes the sleeper hit “Summertime Sadness,” helped her attain critical and commercial success. Ultraviolence (2014), Del Rey’s third studio album, featured a stronger reliance on guitar-driven instrumentation and debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Her fourth and fifth studio albums, Honeymoon (2015) and Lust for Life (2017) marked a return to the stylistic traditions of her earlier work, while she critically acclaimed sixth album, Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019), explored the soft rock genre. Norman Fucking Rockwell! was released on April 5, 2019.

Del Rey followed this up with the albums Chemtrails over the Country Club and Blue Banisters, both of which were released in 2021 by Atlantic Records.

She has also worked on soundtracks for visual media; in 2013, she composed and acted in the critically acclaimed musical short Tropico, and she sang the song “Young and Beautiful” for the film The Great Gatsby.

“Once Upon a Dream” was recorded for the dark fantasy adventure film Maleficent in 2014, and the self-titled theme song for the biopic Big Eyes was recorded in the same year. In 2019, Del Rey worked with Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus on the song “Don’t Call Me Angel,” which was released as the theme song for the action-comedy Charlie’s Angels.

The song peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Within the realm of literature and photography, Del Rey has released the poetry and photographic collection Violet Bent Backward over the Grass (2020).

Life and career

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant was born on June 21, 1985,[8] in Manhattan, New York City,[9] to Robert England Grant Jr., a copywriter at Grey Group, and Patricia Ann “Pat” (née Hill), an account executive at Grey Group. She is the youngest of three children.

Lana has two younger siblings: Caroline and Charlie, who are both under the age of five. She was raised as a Roman Catholic and is descended from Scottish ancestors. Her forefathers were from the Scottish county of Lanarkshire. She and her family relocated to Lake Placid, New York when she was one year old.

Her father worked at a furniture company before going into business for himself as an entrepreneurial domain investor, while her mother was a schoolteacher in Lake Placid. While living in the area, she attended St. Agnes School during her elementary school years and began singing in her church choir, in which she served as cantor.

She briefly attended the high school where her mother taught for a year, but when she was 15, her parents sent her to Kent School in order to address a developing drinking issue that had developed in her household.

Her uncle, who works as an admissions officer at the institution, was instrumental in securing her financial aid to attend. It was difficult for Grant to make acquaintances during the majority of her adolescent and early adult years, according to Grant. She has stated that death has troubled her since a young age and that it has played a role in her emotions of fear and alienation:

When I was a child, I was completely taken aback by the realization that my mother, father, and everyone else I knew was all going to die one day, including me. I was having a sort of philosophical crisis at the time. I couldn’t believe we were both going to die.

For some reason, my information seemed to take precedence over my own experience. For a long period of time, I was depressed. I found myself in a lot of difficulties. I used to be a heavy drinker. That was a difficult period in my life.

Immediately following graduation from the Kent School, she spent a year living with her aunt and uncle on Long Island, where she worked as a waitress.

The following year, Grant’s uncle taught her how to play the guitar, and she “realized [that] she] could potentially write a million songs with those six chords,” according to Grant.

Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena were two of the aliases she used to perform in nightclubs around the city after she graduated. She began creating songs and playing in nightclubs around the city shortly after.

“I was constantly singing, but I had no intention of pursuing it professionally,” she admitted. “When I moved to New York City at the age of eighteen, I began performing in Brooklyn nightclubs—I have many wonderful friends and devoted followers in the underground music scene, but we were all playing for each other at the time—and that was the end of that.”

When Grant was 19 years old, she enrolled at Fordham University in The Bronx, New York, where she studied philosophy with a focus on metaphysics.

In her own words, she chose the subject because it “bridged the gap between God and science… I was interested in God and how technology may bring us closer to understanding where we came from and why.” Del Rey registered a seven-track extended play with the United States Copyright Office in the spring of 2005, while still a student. The application title was Rock Me Stable, with a second title, Young Like Me, also stated on the application.

A second extended play, From the End, was also recorded under Del Rey’s stage name at the time, May Jailer, and released in the same year. Between 2005 and 2006, she worked on an acoustic album called Sirens as part of the May Jailer project, which was released on the internet in the middle of 2012.

During her very first public performance, in 2006, for the Williamsburg Live Songwriting Competition, Del Rey met Van Wilson, an A&R representative for 5 Points Records, an independent label run by David Nichtern, who introduced her to the rest of the 5 Points Records team.

The music company 5 Points approached her when she was a senior at Fordham University in 2007 and offered her a recording contract worth $10,000 for her demo cassette of acoustic tracks, No Kung Fu. After she received the money, she utilized it to relocate to Manhattan Mobile Home Park, a trailer park in North Bergen, New Jersey, where she started working with producer David Kahne.

Nichtern described what happened: “We had hoped to get everything planned and ready to go before she graduated from college, so she could begin touring immediately after graduation. She changed into something else, as a lot of artists do.

Upon her initial arrival, she was strumming an innocuous little acoustic guitar, [she had] sort of straight blonde hair, and she struck us as a particularly attractive young lady. It’s a touch dark, but it’s also quite intelligent. That was something we heard. However, she continued to evolve at a rapid pace.”

The following year, Del Rey graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, and she went on to release a three-track EP, Kill Kill, under the guise of Lizzy Grant, with production by Kahne.

She went on to explain: “David reached out to me only a day after receiving my demo and begged to collaborate. He is well-known as a producer with a high level of integrity who was interested in creating music that wasn’t merely for the masses.”

Meanwhile, Del Rey was working as a community outreach worker, helping the homeless and drug addicts. She had first been involved in community service work while in college when she volunteered to paint homes on an Indian reservation in Utah, where she had met her husband.

She explained her decision to choose a stage name for her feature debut album as follows: “I wanted a moniker that I could use to direct the music in a specific direction. I was visiting Miami on a regular basis at the time, conversing in Spanish with my Cuban friends—Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glitz and glam of the beach. When it came off the tip of the tongue, it sounded just stunning.” It was also inspired by the actress Lana Turner and the Ford Del Rey sedan, which was manufactured and sold in Brazil during the 1980s.

When she first started out, she went by the variant spelling Lana Del Ray, which is also the name under which her self-titled debut album, which was published in January 2010, came out. Her father assisted with the marketing of the album, which was available for purchase on iTunes for a short amount of time before being removed from the service in April of the following year.

In their respective interviews, Kahne and Nichtern stated that Del Rey purchased the rights back from 5 Points because she wanted the album out of circulation in order to “stifle future opportunities to distribute it—an echo of allegations that the action was part of a premeditated strategy.”

In March 2010, three months after Lana Del Ray’s debut album was published, Del Rey met with her managers, Ben Mawson and Ed Millett. They helped Del Rey get out of her contract with 5 Points Records, where she felt “absolutely nothing was happening.” Shortly after, she relocated to London, where she lived with Mawson “for a few years,” according to Mawson. On September 1, 2010, Mando Diao performed with Del Rey at the Union Film Studios in Berlin as part of the MTV Unplugged performance series.

In the same year, she appeared in a short film called Poolside, which she co-produced with a group of friends.

Del Rey posted self-made music videos for her songs “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” on YouTube in 2011. The videos used vintage footage interwoven with photos of Del Rey singing on her webcam and were released in 2011.

“Video Games” became a viral online sensation[1, and Del Rey was signed to Stranger Records, who released the song as her debut single as a result of the success of the video.

According to The Observer, she said: “I only recently posted the music to the internet because it was one of my favorites. To be quite honest, it wasn’t intended to be the single, but the response has been very positive.” A Q Award for “Next Big Thing” in October 2011 and an Ivor Novello for “Best Contemporary Song” in 2012 were both given to her for this song.

Her second studio album Born to Die will be released by Interscope Records and Polydor Records in the same month she inked a joint agreement with them.

In the same year, she began a relationship with Scottish singer Barrie-James O’Neill. After three years together, the pair decided to call it quits in 2014. A harsh response from numerous critics and the general public followed Del Rey’s performance of two songs from the album on Saturday Night Live on January 14, 2012.

The performance was regarded as uneven and vocally unsteady by critics and the general public. At a previous press conference, she justified her inclusion on the program, stating: “I’m a competent musician… The fact that I’ve been singing for a long time, and I believe that [SNL creator] Lorne Michaels is aware of this, suggests that this is not a random pick.”

Born to Die was released globally on January 31, 2012, to critical and commercial acclaim. It peaked at number one in 11 countries and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 album chart in the United States, despite mixed reviews from critics at the time.

She revealed the following week that she had purchased the rights to her 2010 debut album and that she planned to re-release it in the summer of 2012 through Interscope Records and Polydor.

However, in contrast to Del Rey’s press statement, her previous record label and producer David Kahne have both indicated that she purchased the rights to the album when she and the label split ways in April 2010 owing to the offer of a new deal.

It sold 3.4 million copies in 2012, making it the seventh best-selling album of the year. Born to Die was released in 2011. Born to Die remained on the Billboard 200 list for a long time following its release in the United States, where it peaked at number 76 after 36 weeks on the chart.

Del Rey debuted the Jaguar F-Type at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012, and the car was designed by him.

Jaguar’s worldwide brand director, Adrian Hallmark, defended the company’s decision by stating that Del Rey represented “a unique blend of authenticity and modernity.” She also recorded the song “Burning Desire,” which was featured in a promotional short film for the car, which was released in conjunction with the vehicle. As a promotional single for the H&M 2012 autumn campaign, a music video for Del Rey’s cover version of “Blue Velvet” was released in late September 2012. Del Rey also appeared in print advertisements for the campaign.

Del Rey released the single “Ride” on September 25 to promote her next EP, Paradise, which will be released on October 1. She then launched the music video for “Ride” on October 10, 2012, at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, California, where she was also in attendance.

Due to Del Rey’s portrayal as a prostitute in a biker gang, some commentators criticized the video for being reportedly pro-prostitution and antifeminist.

In addition to being released as a standalone album on November 12, 2012, Paradise was also published as Born to Die: The Paradise Edition, which merged Del Rey’s previous album with the eight new tracks from Paradise.

Paradise was Del Rey’s second top 10 albums in the United States, debuting at number 10 on the Billboard 200 with 67,000 copies sold in its first week of release. It was the singer’s first top 10 album in the country.

It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, which it won. Del Rey was nominated for numerous awards at the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards, which were held in November, and she took home the award for Best Alternative Performer.

She received the International Female Solo Artist award at the Brit Awards in February 2013 and went on to win two Echo Awards in the following months, in the categories of Best International Newcomer and Best International Pop/Rock Artist, respectively.

Over the next several months, she released videos for two cover songs: one of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel#2” and another of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra’s “Summer Wine,” which she performed with her then-boyfriend, Barrie-James O’Neill.

To coincide with the debut of the 2013 film rendition of The Great Gatsby, Del Rey released an original song titled “Young and Beautiful” in May of that year. Following the release of the song, it reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Nevertheless, the label prematurely pulled the song from contemporary hit radio and decided to send a different song to the format; on July 2, 2013, a Cedric Gervais remix of Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” was sent to the format; a sleeper hit, the song proved to be a success, surpassing “Young and Beautiful” and reaching number 6 in the United States, becoming her first American top ten hits.

In 2013, the remix was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical, while “Young and Beautiful” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Director Anthony Mandler directed Del Rey in Tropico, a musical short film set to tracks from Paradise that premiered in June 2013. Tropico was directed by Del Rey.

The film premiered on December 4, 2013, at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, with Del Rey in attendance. On December 6, the soundtrack was made available through digital distribution channels.

Artistry

Some music critics referred to Del Rey’s music as “Hollywood sadcore” when she released her debut album, which was released in 2012. A consistent theme of the 1950s and 1960s Americana has been observed by critics as well as Del Rey herself in terms of the film’s cinematic sound and references to many parts of pop culture.

Because of the strong aspects of American nostalgia in her music, Idolator categorizes her as solidly in the alternative pop category. In an interview with ARTISTdirect, Del Rey emphasized her connection to the past, stating, “I wasn’t even born in the ’50s, but I feel like I was there.”

Singer Lana Del Rey is typically considered an alternative pop artist.

Her works have been classified as pop art, and she is a member of the Pop Art movement.

rock and roll, dream pop, baroque pop, baroque pop, baroque pop

Indie pop, psychedelic rock, and trip-hop are all incorporated into the music.

Trap music incorporates aspects of hip hop, lo-fi, and trap music.

A reviewer for the independent music magazine Drowned in Sound said of Born to Die, “She likes that whole hip hop thing though, has this whole swagger thing going that not many girls like her got,” and added that the soundtrack “sounded like a poppier Bond score.”

In succeeding albums, Del Rey experimented with several styles, most notably with Ultraviolence, which featured a guitar-based sound that was reminiscent of psychedelic and desert rock.

As noted by Billboard’s Kenneth Partridge, “[Del Rey] sings about drugs, automobiles, money, and the terrible dudes she’s always falling for, and while there’s still a sepia-toned mid-century taste to several of these songs, [Del Rey] isn’t fronting these songs like a thugged-out Bette Davis.”

The release of Honeymoon was regarded as “about music as a time warp, with her languorous croons over molasses-like arrangements meant to make clock hands seem so slow that it is likely, at times, that they might go backward,” according to one reviewer.

Lizzy Grant has performed under a variety of stage names before becoming known as Lana Del Rey. She has also gone by the aliases Lizzy Grant, Lana Rey Del Mar, Sparkle Jump Rope Queen, and May Jailer.

“Hawaiian glam metal,” she referred to her music under the stage name Lizzy Grant, although the work of her May Jailer project was purely acoustic.

Many pops, jazz, and blues performers from the mid-twentieth century have been cited as influences by Del Rey, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Bobby Vinton, The Crystals, and Miles Davis. Del Rey’s music is influenced by a wide range of musical artists.

Also influencing the music of Julee Cruise and Julie London were torch singers Julie London and Julee Cruise.

Her favorite musicians include Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley, among others. In 2012, she told BBC radio presenter Jo Whiley, “[I truly] really appreciate the masters of every genre.”

As well as folk musicians such as Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, and Bruce Springsteen, Del Rey has drawn inspiration from a variety of rock and pop musicians and groups from the late twentieth century, including Britney Spears, singer-songwriter Lou Reed, and rock band the Eagles, as well as Bruce Springsteen and Britney Spears. She has also mentioned modern musicians such as singer-songwriter Cat Power, Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, rapper Eminem, and singer Amy Winehouse as performers she admires.

Born to Die was partially inspired by the music of the film American Beauty, which Del Rey regarded as a source of inspiration.

As well as Lauren Bacall, she has remarked that she admires her and her achievements. Inspired by poetry, Del Rey credits writers such as Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg with being important influences on her music. Del Rey has also identified the film directors David Lynch and Federico Fellini, as well as the artist’s Mark Ryden and Pablo Picasso, as sources of inspiration for his work.

Del Rey’s music videos are also known for having a cinematic aspect to them, as well as a nostalgic feel to them.

With the use of a webcam and some vintage home videos and films, Del Rey created “homemade music videos” in the early stages of her career, a style that helped her earn early notoriety for her music. Once these DIY videos became popular, Del Rey released a series of high-budget music videos, including “Born to Die” and “National Anthem” (both 2012), as well as the single “Young and Beautiful” in 2013. Her “bad girl” and “gangster Nancy Sinatra” personas were prominent in her early videos.

In the years that followed, Del Rey’s videos for songs like “Summer Wine”, “Carmen,” and “Summertime Sadness” were all created with substantially smaller budgets, but they all preserved more characteristics of her former aesthetic. The Ultraviolence era featured a mix of high-budget movies and home videos, whereas the Honeymoon era featured nearly exclusively film noir-influenced professionally shot images, with the exception of a few exceptions. Fortunes such as “Pretty When You Cry” and “Honeymoon,” some of Del Rey’s homemade music videos were never published because the singer felt they were “too boring.”

This was true for both eras. The Lust for Life era was often regarded as having a futuristic edge to it, as evidenced by its mildly filtered vintage-inspired appearance. For Norman Fucking Rockwell, Del Rey’s sister, Chuck Grant, directed three of the videos in Del Rey’s “homemade video” format, while Rich Lee directed the two follow-up videos in a similar vintage but futuristic style to the videos for Lust for Life, which he had previously directed for the album.

Del Rey’s live performances have been praised by critics for being “usually simple but sincere.”

For more than an hour, Lana Del Rey was strangely casual, singing and smiling with the comfort of someone playing singer-songwriter night at a local coffee shop, according to a concert review published in The New York Times in September 2017.

The Hollywood Reporter released another review by Roy Train in 2014, which stated that there was “a gap in her bonhomie, visible even from my position at the opposite end of the stage far above the fray, the frost still tangible.”

Lana Del Rey & Barrie-James O’Neill

It was claimed that Del Rey and Scottish singer Barrie-James O’Neill had gotten engaged in summer 2013 after two years of dating, but the couple announced their separation in June 2014 after two years of dating.

According to Us Weekly, she informed the German-language Swiss newspaper 20 Minten that she and her husband were now not together. “He’s a beautiful person on the inside and out. However, there are some issues that he must deal with.” There is very little information available regarding their unusual romance.

Lana Del Rey & Francesco Carrozzini

In the months following her breakup with O’Neill, Del Rey apparently dated Italian photographer Francesco Carrozzini on-and-off for a year and a half, according to a source for the New York Daily News, before the two were supposedly no longer together in November 2015.

It was reported that an informant claimed that the couple “loves each other,” but that “she has wanted to settle down for over a year now and he’s simply not there yet.” However, despite the fact that Del Rey has never talked publicly about the relationship, some believe that her 2017 song “13 Beaches” may be about the photographer.

Lana Del Rey & G-Eazy

In April 2017, reports surfaced that Del Rey and G-Eazy were photographed kissing at Coachella, igniting speculation about a possible romance between the two. An anonymous insider told The Mirror that the couple had spent the entire weekend together. “They didn’t seem to be able to tear themselves apart from one another and appeared to be deeply in love.” However, according to reports, the relationship was short-lived.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the two have reportedly parted ways five months after their reported Coachella encounter. According to reports, the rapper replaced Del Rey on his tune “Him & I” with Halsey, with whom he apparently began dating shortly after. Del Rey’s song “Moana” was written in response to G-song Eazy’s “Moana,” and many believe her 2017 song “White Mustang” was written in response to G-Eazy, so it doesn’t appear that the separation was entirely friendly.

Lana Del Rey & Sean Larkin

According to People magazine, Del Rey began dating police officer Sean “Sticks” Larkin in September of this year, two years after her supposed breakup with G-Eazy. Del Rey confirmed the new relationship to the Los Angeles Times a short time after it was announced.

Afterward, they continued to date for six months (and made a couple of adorable red carpet appearances together) before deciding to part ways. “We still talk and whatnot,” Larkin said in a March 2020 interview with the New York Times, confirming that he and Del Rey were “just friends.” “We still talk and whatnot,” he continued, “we just have hectic schedules right now.”

Lana Del Rey Husband Clayton Johnson

During his performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in December 2020, fans were able to catch a glimpse of Del Rey sporting what appeared to be a massive rock on that finger. After that, a source for People magazine revealed that Del Rey was engaged to Clayton Johnson, her rumored musician boyfriend of four months, according to the story.

They met on a dating service, according to People, and in August 2020, Johnson drew attention when he wrote a romantic comment on one of Del Rey’s Instagram images, prompting speculation that the two were dating. According to reports, things escalated swiftly from there. For the time being, Del Rey has refused to disclose if she is genuinely engaged (or even dating Johnson), so fans will have to wait and see what happens.

He proposed with a ring! Us Weekly has confirmed that Lana Del Rey has proposed to her boyfriend Clayton Johnson after just dating for a little over a year.

According to a source who spoke to Us on Tuesday, December 15, Johnson recently proposed to his girlfriend. A representative for Del Rey declined to comment.

When she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, December 14, she fueled engagement rumors by hinting that she was engaged to be married to her boyfriend.

Observant viewers noticed a ring on Del Rey’s left index finger during her performance of “Love You Like a Woman” on the show.

“Did you see that?” a fan asked on Twitter, after posting a close-up photo of the singer’s bling.

Another Twitter user had pointed out that “Lana is caught with a ring on her finger AGAIN” after the Grammy nominee shared a photo of herself on Instagram on Saturday, December 12, promoting her Tonight Show appearance, which had occurred two days previously.

The “Summertime Sadness” singer’s hands were swinging behind her back in the photograph, but a ring could be seen on her left index finger.

The Engagement of Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, Among Other Celebrities, During the Coronavirus Epidemic Del Rey was also photographed wearing a diamond sparkler last month, prompting some admirers to wonder if Johnson, 31, had proposed.

“What’s with the ring on her finger? A user speculated on Twitter in November, after seeing an Instagram Story photo of the musician wearing the ring while driving. “Is she engaged?” the user wrote. When she posed for a photo with her boyfriend on Halloween, one fan noted that the singer of “Blue Jeans” was also sporting the rock. Despite the fact that they were costumed as the Scarecrow and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, the duo was all smiled in the photo, which was taken while Del Rey made a peace sign with her ring finger, which was highlighted in the snap.

Since August, the couple has been making appearances on each other’s social media accounts for months at a time.

Last month, Johnson posted a video of the “Cinnamon Girl” singer swimming in a pool to his Instagram Story, which has since been deleted. This was followed up by another shot showing himself sitting at a table with Del Rey’s feet visible from the opposite side the next week.

After Del Rey posted a video of herself nearly kissing a man while holding a playing card in her lips in August, fans noted that the guitarist was commenting on her Instagram account for the first time. To this he responded with the words “I wish I was that card.” The announcement of the engagement occurred eight months after Del Rey ended her relationship with Sean “Sticks” Larkin. According to the New York Times, the Live PD star, 46, revealed that the couple had ended their relationship in March, saying that they were “just friends” after dating for six months.

The former couple was first spotted together in September of this year when out and about in New York City, according to reports. In December of that year, they made their affair on the Instagram official.
